What we will build for the 1890s: "The arrival of automatic promotion, the Football Alliance merger, and the birth of Liverpool FC." Below is our prototype blueprint showing how this decade’s social narrative, terrace subculture, archival photography, and filmed supporter interviews will be structured as we roll out production across our partner clubs.
The 1890s saw the rapid expansion of professional football. In 1892, the rival Football Alliance was absorbed to create Division Two. The infamous 1898 Stoke vs Burnley 0-0 'Test Match' controversy forced the League to abolish end-of-season play-offs in favour of automatic promotion and relegation. On Merseyside, an internal dispute over Anfield's rent led to Everton departing for Goodison Park, giving birth to Liverpool FC in 1892.
Archibald Leitch began designing the first modern grandstands. Crowds surpassed 20,000 regularly, and the first special football excursion trains began carrying travelling away supporters across railway networks.
The penalty kick was officially introduced in 1891 following an intentional goal-line handball by Notts County. Goalkeeping gloves were non-existent, and heavy leather balls laced with rawhide tested heading bravery.
