What we will build for the 1880s: "The birth of league football at Manchester's Royal Hotel and the original Invincibles." Below is our prototype blueprint showing how this decade’s social narrative, terrace subculture, archival photography, and filmed supporter interviews will be structured as we roll out production across our partner clubs.
In April 1888, William McGregor of Aston Villa convened representatives at the Royal Hotel in Manchester to solve the chaos of unfulfilled friendly fixtures. Twelve pioneer clubs formed the Football League. Preston North End completed the inaugural season unbeaten, claiming the League and FA Cup without conceding a single cup goal.

Matches were attended by workers in flat caps and woollen waistcoats straight from textile mills and coal pits. Ground admissions were sixpence, with supporters standing on rudimentary cinder banks and behind rope cordons.
The classic Victorian 'Pyramid' formation (2-3-5) reigned supreme. Goalkeepers were permitted to handle the ball anywhere in their own half. Referees officiated with a handkerchief and bell before the universal introduction of the whistle in 1888.
