What we will build for the 1980s: "Mersey hegemony, Italian sportswear, tragedy, and three points for a win." Below is our prototype blueprint showing how this decade’s social narrative, terrace subculture, archival photography, and filmed supporter interviews will be structured as we roll out production across our partner clubs.
The 1980s were English football's most tumultuous decade. Merseyside ruled supreme: Liverpool and Howard Kendall's Everton won eight league titles between them. In 1981, the Football League introduced three points for a win. Tragedies at Valley Parade, Heysel, and Hillsborough in 1989 sparked profound grief and led directly to the 1990 Taylor Report, mandating all-seater stadiums.
The 'Football Casual' subculture was born. Away supporters travelled across Europe and returned with Fila, Ellesse, Sergio Tacchini, and Adidas trainers. Independent fanzines like 'When Saturday Comes' gave voice to terrace supporters.
The European ban following Heysel from 1985–1990 isolated English tactics from continental evolution, reinforcing high-tempo pressing and physical direct play.
