What we will build for the 1940s: "The 1948/49 peak attendance season and Matt Busby's rebuild from bomb-damaged rubble." Below is our prototype blueprint showing how this decade’s social narrative, terrace subculture, archival photography, and filmed supporter interviews will be structured as we roll out production across our partner clubs.
After wartime leagues kept public spirits high, football exploded upon peacetime resumption. In the 1948/49 season, a staggering 41.3 million spectators attended Football League matches, an all-time record. Matt Busby took charge of Manchester United, training at Maine Road whilst Old Trafford was rebuilt following Luftwaffe bombing, and won the 1948 FA Cup.
Ex-servicemen and factory workers queued overnight for ticket allocations. The atmosphere was celebratory, orderly, and deeply woven into British civic identity.
Substitutions were still forbidden; injured players were either patched up with bandaging on the touchline or played as 'passengers' on the wing.
Genuine contemporary 19th-century photographs, architectural records, and Victorian match engravings preserved from the foundation of the English Football League. Click any plate to inspect full archival details and provenance.
Preview how individual Club Chronicles will connect to this era as we progress through our phased rollout, beginning with our initial cohort of Phase 1 partner clubs and expanding to all 22 North West teams.
